Second manual is older Hornady reloading manual listing the 300 gr. jacketed bullet & 3031 powder in a Trapdoor: Starting load is 40.9 grains for 1300 fps, 43.1 gr. for 1400 fps, 49.8 gr. for 1700 fps., and a max of 52 grains for 1800 fps. The last was a Lyman manual listing 45.5 gr. of 3031 for 1580 fps and a max of only 48 grains for 1661 fps.3,901. RL-7 is my "go to" powder for the 45/70 from 330 gr Hp. to 550 grain WFNs, AA2015 is in that burn range and works well, I would not even experiment with these powders in the 44/40, they are too slow and will result in squib loads and much unburnt powder. For mild loads in the 44/40 I'd def. try Trail Boss powder.

For the 45Colt, depends on how hot you want to load them...the powders in the medium-slow area may be worth a try. Herco, N350, N344, or N347 (those Vihtavauri powders may not be easy to find). AA 5744 works for the Colt and 45-70. BP tends to burn with much low FPS veriations than smokeless powder and when bp cartidges rifles ,or old school muzzle loaders powder is measured and dropped they will shoot with single digit difference between rounds.
