For me, small army tactics might work, but you need to double your troops numbers. 30 instead of 15 or so. There's no real scenario where you use 15 "elite" troops for anything. I found auto complete the slowest way tbh. If you just go into a battle and press all troops then f6 it makes you give a bunch of AI commands that level your tactics quickly.
