How to test an atv coil

Aug 7, 2014. 22. Aug 7, 2014. #1. I am building a bench test unit for motorcycle and ATV CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) Units and Ignition Coils. My questions relate to whether the outputs are AC or DC. I can provide some example schematics of the CDI's. This is the diagram I made of how the CDI's work in general..

WHen it starts running bad, check the ohms on it. Usually when hot the ohms are around 500-550 or so for the 450 ohm coil and 50 or so for the smaller high speed coil. MOST of the time combined they are under 600 ohms when the sled is warm. Start the sled on the stand and let it run for a few minutes and then check the ohms again.3787 posts · Joined 2007. #2 · Oct 8, 2009. No, multimeters are not all the same. When you test either the CDI igniter or the rectifier/regulator you want to use a very high impedance digital multimeter. Analog units will not work, nor will the ultra low cost versions of the digital meters now available. Grab a wrench, unscrew, and remove the ignition coil from its mounting. Make sure the vehicle is off and cooled down. Look up the resistance specifications for your ignition coil. Turn on the ohmmeter and set it to the resistance (ohms) setting. To measure the resistance of the primary winding, just put the ohmmeter leads on the two outer ...Pull that plug and ground it. With the negative coil wire disconnected and have the positive wire at battery voltage. Ground the negative side with a screw driver. If the coil is good you'll see the plug fire. You can use this method with the coil wire post and some kind of gap between ground.I've troubleshot my way to to the hilliard coil wire connector under the pod. Have 23.5 ohms across the coil and I have 12v on the red but also fluctuating voltage on the brown wires. Somehow there is stray voltage feeding from somewhere into the ground wires. There's 2 browns going to one pin on the connector but can't tell where they come from.

I did another ohm test this week and nothing measured. So I took the Left crank case cover off and unplugged the pulse coil blue yellow wire and tested directly (red wire to the pulse terminal after unplugging the blue/yellow wire and then the black multimeter wire to several different grounding points on the four wheeler) Nothing …skinnybenny. 68 posts · Joined 2005. #2 · May 27, 2006. generally with stators coils there is two wires hanging off of em. Step 2. With the ignition on and the engine running, measure between the coils/phases by connecting the multimeter's leads to the three terminals in the stator's electrical connector. Measure between phases 1 and 2; 2 and 3; and 1 and 3. There should be a positive reading between the terminals. Step 3.Apr 1, 2012 ... Ignition Coil replacement. Hello all, picked up a 1995 Magnum 425 last week. The previous owner said it ran, he parked it, went back to start it a few days later and it wasn't getting spark (according to him). It isn't in terrible shape for being a '95.
